Audioboo: Neat Way to Share Audioclips

Audioboo

I’ve known about Audioboo for quite a while but I haven’t really gotten around to test it, so when I was reminded of it as I was watching TWiT Live, I decided to give it a spin for real.

Audioboo is a free service that lets you record and publish "boo’s" from the iPhone! It comes as a free download from the App Store and once over on the phone, it is simply to just record your own clips. On the phone, you can also view the latest boos and listen to them.

The website gives you more browsing capabilities where you can follow users to get notified when they post news boos. What’s brilliant with it is that it generates an RSS feed for you so that people interested can subscribe to your boos. With some usage of other services (like Feedburner), you can tweak the feed up for iTunes! In essence you could make a podcast from using Audioboo, from the iPhone.

From what I hear, they are working on a Videoboo that would work the same only with video, from the iPhone 3GS.

Friday Tutorial Day: Check out the back ones!

Today, I actually want to make the Friday Tutorial Day into a back looking day! Check out the previous tutorials on the site. Here are some links to some good ones:

My Favourite List of Podcasts I Subcribe to

Favourite List of Podcasts

If you do any kind of commuting, podcasts are going to save you, I promise! With music, I find myself listening to the same things all over again to the point when they become boring. I also want to listen to music mainly when writing (like now) as I don’t loose any focus on the text then. However podcasts are great to have and listen to when you aren’t doing a lot, such as when you commute! Here are some that I subscribe to.

The First Programmer

The First Programmer

If it hadn’t been for the fact that my mom used to input data into computers – by punching little holes in keypunch cards – while serving in the Air Force, I’d have been one of those people who thought computers had been invented in the mid 70’s by a couple guys named Steve and somebody named Bill (“Those were personal computers? Yeah, so, aren’t all computers “personal”? What? The size of whole rooms, you say???”). Well! Now, we’ve established that my historical knowledge does not extend to technology. That being said I was perusing a photo collection the other day and saw two photographs that caught my eye. They’re of the same place, the U.S. Treasury Department Bonus Bureau Computing Division.

Save Mojo – A buddy of mine’s cat!

Save Mojo

It’s not often at all that I blog about things like this, however I am doing it for the best of reasons. One of my buddies, David Zarzecki, sent me a message just now to tell me that his cat was really sick and without the medical treatment, is going to die.  As if that wasn’t enough, David recently got unemployed, making this money really hard to get and after a last visit to the Intensive Care, costing a lot, it is really tight.

What Dave is asking for isn’t a whole lot. He is asking for donations of anything you might be able to spare, even if it is only one dollar, it all helps to reach the full goal of $1,300 for the surgery that will save his life! Go to the Save Mojo website to read more about Mojo, his illness and what you can do to help, or to donate right away!

Stressing down

Stressing Down

In recent weeks I have noticed that I’m becoming more and more stressed out due to everything that is on my plate. I have found that all things in school worry me a lot and all that worry really drains my energy, meaning that I don’t get half as much done. While I do promise to go and talk to someone who knows this stuff and see if they have any tips for this, I feel there are a few things I can do in my life that will help with this and I think this can be the same for many freelancers and designers with me. Here are three.

Thursday Newsmix

 Freelance Folder

With the recent change of blog format here on the site (as you may have noticed) it’s gotten more focus on articles and informative things during the week but I definitely wanted to preserve the newsposts which have been moved to once a week, on Thursdays. Here are the newsmix for this week:

  • Freelance Folder has posted a really great article about how you should position yourself as an expert in your field. It is certainly something important and doing it will definitely help you business. Check it out!

  • When using AJAX to develop websites you can do some cool effects. Antonio Lupetti over at the woork blog has listed a couple of different ways to do auto-complete fields, all really nice.

  • ProBlogger has an article on a topic that we can all use help on at a very fitting time for myself. It’s some tips on writing articles, papers, documents and the likes. It’s a really important topic that we’re constantly faced doing and these tips do remind you to get down and dirty with your text!

  •  Canon released a bunch of new cameras today and I’ll try to cover them a bit before Monday. There is a Swedish photo trade-show coming here in my city this weekend that I’m going to be attending and blogging partly from as I get my hands on some cool things, hopefully these new Canons.

Batch Processing – A Path Away from Procrastination

Batch Processing - A Path Away From Procrastination

Perhaps the worst enemy for all of us when it comes to work and time is procrastination. You rarely want to do the things that you really need to do which winds up hurting you in the long run, either by stressing out or doing bad things. Lately though, I have found batch processing to help me get control of my life.

Thursday News Gatherings

 Pixel to EM

  • Google has launched a new beta service that allows you to access Gmail offline! It’s built on Google Gears caching your webpage and your writing of an email, saving it for when you get online again. They are rolling out the feature slowly to registered accounts and it is still a beta service but still rather cool! I’ve not got to trying it yet but once I do I’ll let you know.

  • If you are doing a lot of web coding you’ll probably find yourself doing conversions from pixel based sizes to units like em. Here’s a great site called PXtoEM that will let you easily convert pixel sizes into the proper em value.

  • If you’re a website owner and a Twitter addict (like myself) you might want to integrate your website with your Twitter postings. I wrote last week about how you can do that using WordPress but if you only want a simple widget that displays your latest tweets, here is an article that explains how to build your own custom widget for that!

  • It happens to everyone at one point. You get hijacked on your site. Over at Freelance Switch they have an article today talking about just that, what to do when you get hijacked and how to do something about it in the best manner!

Tuesday Bites

Smashing Magazine

Quite a few goodies saved up for today, so the headline I thought was rather suitable.

  • Smashing Magazine has a really good, large collection of free vector packs that really does look great! Personally, I think vectors can be rather hard to find, especially free ones. The list includes foliage, abstracts, ornaments and a lot more. Definitely check it out and remember, it’s all free but very high-quality.

  • If you are getting into PHP developing, you should be learning how to code using OOP (Objected Oriented Programming). It’s basically time-saving and just better and cleaner coding. To get started on that, NETTUTS has got a tutorial that you can follow that takes you from the start to finish on getting into OOP PHP coding.

  • Social Networking can be a really good way of promoting your website and your blog. Over at ProBlogger there is a great article on how to use Facebook to promote your blog. It’s a good read that goes though the basics on how blog promotion at Facebook can be used the best.

  • My great friend, Elizabeth Gast has an article on her blog today on "Hanging your Shingle", where she talks about the freelancing area and some tips on when you should open up for business and when to refrain from doing that, for your own sake and others. Really go and read it, a very informational to-the-point article.

Those are the goodie-bites for today! Get visiting the really cool resources listed, it can really do a lot of good. If you are looking to be able to advertise on this site, you can purchase sidebar advertising (125×125 pixel banners) for just $5/month right now! Get them while they are on sale and available!
