WordPress iPhone App

I know, I know. It is a somewhat corny blog title but that’s the best I could do at this hour. So anyway, I wrote two blog posts earlier today. One from the WordPress native iPhone App and one from the mobile WPhone plugin for WordPress. I had my complaints on the app that it can’t do pages and comments but while working with both for a while today and discussing it with Terry White, I’ve found my way which I think I’ll be using them.

There is just no better way right now to make blog posts on the iPhone than from the native app itself. It can post pictures (sadly you can’t choose where in the post they appear) and you can manage the posts far more easily. Sadly you can’t input hyperlinks or any text formatting in either of them which is a bummer.

The interface of the mobile plugin is really good for being a plugin and it is the best solution for editing comments, pages and users. You know, the extra bit on your blog. However the posting of posts is just noway near the advanced (under the circumstances yes) way the app does it. Now, I’m not saying there is not room for improvement. I like many want links, text formatting and a lot more. Yet I feel the app has a more positive feel to it and is the future for the editing.

Right now though, I can see myself sticking with both. I’m definitely going to use the app for all blog posts I do and if I need to do anything else, the mobile version of the control panel is a good step in the right direction and something easy to use for that. It just takes a little reassessment of what I thought would be in it to see that it is really good. I thought at least that comments would be there though and it is definitely (along with formatting) something that could well make use in the app.

As another way of blogging from the iPhone, we have the plugin called WPhone. Sure it can’t do hyperlinks (neither can the app) but it has the benefit of being able to do more. For example you can write pages and manage comments and plugins from the interface. As if that wasn’t it, being safari and web based, you can just turn it around and you will get the vertical keyboard that you just can’t in the app that makes typing fly. A bummer though is that you can’t get any images…

Granted neither is this one perfect by I don’t know yet which one I like the most…

So, this is the first blog post that I am making from my iPhone. This post is using the WordPress app now available in the app store.

I don’t fancy this app that much as I had expected too because it just let’s me post posts and not pages or see comments etc.

I’m doing this as a comparative review between this app and a free (which this also is) plugin that gives a full interface. Next post from that…

Google Blog

I’ve been very busy today sorting and working with photos from my week away last week and getting back into things so that’s why there have been this little delay in the news post.

  • Last Wednesday the ISO group decided to take the Adobe PDF document seriously and approved it as an ISO standard. From now and on the format will be recognised as format ISO32000-1 and it will be controlled by the organisation.

  • Last week also Google announced that the search engine is now indexing flash! According to their official blog they have now "perfected the algorithm" to now index flash. This is all pretty exciting as it makes SEO with flash a lot easier! Read more about it at Viget Inspire.

  • Last but not least Nik Software has announced the release of Color Efex Pro 3.0 for Nikon Capture NX 2.0. Existing users can upgrade to the 3.0 version for free. The software is available in a Complete ($179.95) and a Select ($99.95) edition.

And as it turned out a terrible lot of "last"’s :D

MacHeist

It was supposed to be early Saturday but things got interupted and it is not later instead, but here are still some news for you from today and yesterday. Have a great weekend!

  • The people over at MacHeist is currently offering Parallels Desktop 3 and MacPilot for the amazing price of $49. What’s more, if you are a returning MacHeist buyer you can get an extra $10 off if you sign in with your account details upon purchase!

  • A while ago I wrote that Scott Kelby posted a list of his top requested features on his blog and asked all his readers to contribute with a list. Well, now there is a poll up on the subject where you can vote on your favourite ones on the list. Note though that it isn’t any Adobe official thing but merely an experiment.

  • If you are a Photoshop user and a user of the Olympus E-420 or E-520 then you should be happy to know that Adobe Camera Raw 4.5 Beta does support the RAW format in both of those cameras. You can find the plugin here.

Screen Calibration using the Spyder3

Today my friends is an important day, or as I very recently realised, a very important day! Today is the calibrate your screen day. Wait you might say, I didn’t know this existed? Well it didn’t until I just invented it. Here’s the story.

I’ve never really been that big on screen calibration and mainly seen it as a thing that would just cost me money for not that visible results and so I never really tried it or anything, just dismissed because of the cost. Now however, yesterday, I got to try the calibration deal with a Spyder3 Elite that we have in the store where I work and man did it do a difference! I mean even at my laptop screen, yes, my glossy, low-qual MacBook screen it made a big difference. I’m now totally hooked up on this and going to order my own Spyder3 and make sure I calibrate my screen and colour manage all more properly than I’ve done before. It’s something I never really started to learn because I did dismiss it without seeing the difference!

As it should be, all because I am psyched up about it, today becomes the ”Calibrate your screen day” and be sure to see more things on screen calibration soon when I get up and running.

» Late Tuesday Things

Smultron

It’s busy times right now preparing the shop windows and all for the summer and sales and I’m a bit of the in-house web designer and design/tech guy so I actually get to do a lot of it.

  • Microsoft has released a critical update to Office for Mac 2008 bringing it up to 12.1.1. It should fix several things mainly stability and performance issues. The update is available through the Auto Updater which you can get to by going into either Office application and choose "Check for Updates".

  • Here’s a little tip for you, something I always do. If you are trying to design something, start with a piece of paper and a pencil (having an eraser nearby would be pretty nifty as well). This way you can lay up a lot of things and write comments to yourself before working and finalising it on the computer. Also very easy to show to other people near you for quick-feedback.

  • If you are looking for an advanced text editor also for the Mac that greatly supports coding, then you should look no further than Smultron. It’s a really good editor that supports all major code languages you want to code in mainly for the web but also for more trivial tasks like doing a to-do list. Check it out!

  • I’m in the market for a new lens, mainly a macro lens (can’t be too expensive so the Nikon 105 VR is out unfortunately) and if any of you have any experience with one, post a comment and tell me because I’d love to hear it! Needs to be good for macro and portraits. I have a pretty good idea on what to check out but any input and hands-on experience wouldn’t hurt.

What the Duck 503

It’s once again this time of the week. It’s Friday and it’s a long weekend here. In the morning I’m going to be catching a train down south to join my mum at my grandparents house. I hope for some great shooting weather there and to be able to post some new shots. Meanwhile, here are some news from today!

  • If you are a Lightroom user and move between a laptop and a desktop a lot and want to be able to in a good way move Lightroom stuff like that as well, you probably want to check out Matt Kloskowski’s post today over at his blog where he talked about that. Check it out here.

  • I posted up a new review in the reviews section earlier today. If you like me are a Mac user and use the Twitter service, you might want to check out the review of the Twitterific application.

  • I hope you are reading this amazing comic strip, but in the event that you aren’t, go and check out What the Duck. It’s a great comic strip available on the site right here. Should start up your weekend right.

  • I’m working on some cool new website sections and updates both here and on XLD Studios and both sites will get a few new cool things added coming soon. A post is over there describing the summer changes on that side.

Adobe Photoshop Lightroom Exchange

It’s long weekend here in Sweden because we are celebrating the midsummer time. It’s always fun even though it seems like we are getting the sucky and pretty common, rain! I’m not taking any days off work and blogging because I’m behind, but I will be going away for the weekend, from Saturday through Sunday, with net and computer ;)

  • Apple has announced today that the iTunes Music Store has sold a total of five billion songs over the years, which is a pretty big achievement. Many congrats to Apple on their milestone.

  • If you are editing a lot of CSS code you might be interested in a CSS Code Editor. The guys over at Smashing Magazine have tested a few of the available ones and come up with a nice test on their website.

  • Who doesn’t like the Adobe Exchange? You can get a lot of cool stuff for most of the Adobe CS apps on there. However, a new addition is that there is a new category available, all for Lightroom. So if you like presets etc. visit the Lightroom Exchange.
