Nikon releases several new compact cameras!
Nikon has definitely set for a strong day today announcing several brand new compact cameras to their line-up, probably looking to get into the compact market again. There are six new models announced. The S60, S610, S610C, S560, S710 and the P6000. I’m going to start with the S60 and the S610/S610C and then you can follow along up the ladder after the jump!
Nikon Coolpix S60

The S60 is the "luxury" camera of them all here, mainly going up against the Sony T700. It features a 3.5" touchscreen LCD, 10 megapixels and face detection as well as the full HMDI out and many more connectors. It’s partly wide-angle starting at 33mm and it does reach to a full 165mm, making it a 5x zoom! Main negative thing about this camera seems to be the battery. It is reported to only take 140 images per charge, something that even a camera with disposable alkalines beats!
Nikon Coolpix S610 and S610C

These two twin cameras are identical in every aspect apart from that the C model has got WiFi and the other one doesn’t. It’s got the expected 3.5" LCD and a 10 megapixel sensor. The S610 will be available in many colours while the S610C will only be available in one. Battery wise, on a full charge with the EN-EL12 battery it is said to take a respectable 300 shots.
Nikon Coolpix S560

The S560 is a replacement for the pretty popular S550 model as the affordable, take-it-with-you compact. It’s right there we have a problem though. Battery life is said to only host a 160 shots which is far too little to have it as a general bring-along camera. It does however feature the usual 10 megapixel sensor, 2.7" LCD with face detection and a 5x zoom lens with VR.
Nikon Coolpix S710

Nikon calmly releases this new model, boldly taking the sensor up to a full 14.5 megapixels. Whether this is needed or not, or if it is good or bad, I’ll leave you to your own impression.
It however features a nice 28mm wide lens in a rough 3.6x zoom with VR in it. It’s also got a 3" LCD. Now my final closing is that I think going up to 14.5 megapixels with the camera is rubbish! It won’t make the photos any better to say the least.
Nikon Coolpix P6000

Now we are finally getting to one of my favourite models in the release. It’s the P6000 that’s following up from the pretty popular P5100. It’s got the RAW format, well, raw as in Nikon .NRW instead of the NEF… It’s got a full hot shoe which I’m very glad to see! It’s also got the 28mm wide-angle lens that features a 4x zoom. As usual we also have a 2.7" LCD screen plus the optical viewfinder. Some more fun things include the built in GPS and the ethernet port!
