In this tutorial we take a look at how we can replicate the general Apple text effect that you can see in a lot of Apple commercials.

Before we begin, here is a preview of the effect that we will be creating, really quite simple!

Create New Document

Create a new document, I chose 580×250 at 72ppi (for web viewing).

Add Some Text

Next, grab your text tool (T) and insert some text in the Gill Sans font, using the Regular weight for the heading (using Light if you want body text, which you then would make fully back). Make the base color of the text black.

Add Gradient Effect

Right click on the text layer in the Layers Panel and choose Blending Options. Go to Gradient Overlay, select the default black to white gradient, making sure that the white is at the top (if it is at the bottom, check the Reverse checkbox). Then lower the opacity of the gradient overlay until you are happy with the shade of grey at the top of the text.

Make Rounded Selection

Choose the Elliptical Selection Tool (grouped under the Rectangular Marquee Tool) and drag out a selection just around the text.

White Transparent Fill

Create a new layer and fill that with white (Edit > Fill). Then deselect (Command + D on the Mac, Control + D on the PC). Hold your mouse button right in between the new layer and the type layer (yep, right at that little grey line) while holding down the Option (PC: Alt) key and you will see your icon change. Once you do, click to clip the white fill layer inside the type layer. After that, lower the opacity to your liking.

Final Effect

And this is the final effect!
